Synopsis

Heart failure has emerged as a major cardiovascular health problem. Over the past several decades, it has become apparent that one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with congestive heart failure relates to cardiac arrhythmias. Cardiac arrhythmias are thought to be directly responsible for sudden cardiac death in these patients. In addition, associated cardiac rhythm disturbances are important causes of morbidity, such as cerebral vascular accidents and increased propensity for tachyarrhythmias in the setting of heart failure. Over the past decade increasing data have accumulated defining the pathogenesis of these problems at cellular and molecular levels, in addition to the clinical setting.

Clinical cardiology has become progressively subdivided into more highly specialized domains, yet the modern management of the heart failure patient crosses these boundaries. Heart failure/cardiac transplantation training fellowships have emerged as a vital new subspecialty to train subspecialists in this area, but even heart failure subspecialists depend heavily on their clinical electrophysiology colleagues to optimize management of their heart failure patients, driven by the expanding roles of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

Given the cross-disciplinary nature of heart failure management, the Atlas of Electrophysiclogy in Heart Failure, which explores current concepts in the interface between heart failure and electrophysiology, comes at a timely juncture.
